Traditional Japanese tetsubin (iron teapots) were large vessels used centuries ago to heat water for tea and provide warmth and humidity in the home during the winter. Over time, smaller pots were crafted to allow for steeping tea rather than heating water. Most modern tetsubin fall into the size category for steeping, with a capacity of about 16 to 24 ounces. This tetsubin is a generous 42 ounces, which more closely approximates the size of pots which were used as heating vessels centuries ago. The rounded, offset square shape and the earthy brown finish give this pot an understated elegance and an antique appearance.
