The origins of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild are shrouded in mystery. Some accounts trace the Guild’s birth to Athens in the latter half of the 4th century BCE. Allegedly, several lesser philosophers grew weary of the endless Socratic dialogue endemic in their trade and turned to crafting household implements and playthings. (Hence the assertions that Socrates quaffed his hemlock poison from a Guild-designed chalice, though vigorous debate surrounds the question of whether it was a “disappearing” chalice.)

Others argue that the UPG dates from the High Middle Ages, when the Philosophers Guild entered the world of commerce by selling bawdy pamphlets to pilgrims facing long lines for the restroom. Business boomed until 1211 when Pope Innocent III condemned the publications. Not surprisingly, this led to increased sales, even as half our membership was burned at the stake.

More recently, revisionist historians have pinpointed the birth of the Guild to the time it was still cool to live in New York City’s Lower East Side. Two brothers turned their inner creativity and love of paying rent towards fulfilling the people’s needs for finger puppets, warm slippers, coffee cups, and cracking up at stuff.

Great quality and fantastic design! First off, this mug is top quality. It has a nice heavy weight to it and holds enough coffee to get me going in the morning. I own several mugs from The Unemployed Philosophers Guild and they’ve all been impressive, but this style is my absolute favorite. The design is really vivid and I love the matte finish. Of course the gray/red color scheme fits well with this mug’s particular theme. The quotes are easy to read and they stand out individually, each printed in different fonts – there…

Who wants to wake up in the morning to a happy cup of coffee? Didn’t think I’d love this mug as much as I do… being as Poe is one of my favorite writers, of course I would.

A MUST-HAVE FOR POE FANS! I am a huge Edgar Allan Poe fan, and a collector of whimsical coffee mugs. So, for me, this was the best of both worlds! The mug is a generous size, good quality, and a nice weight. It’s a mug. Now, let’s talk about the design…so colorful, both inside and out, and every feasible space loaded with quotes from E.A.P. classics that any enthusiast, such as myself, is sure to love! There are individual sections for each quote/picture, so they are organized and easy to read-not jumbled together,…
