You May Find That There is Some Crack on Glaze Inside of the Craft. It’s called “Ice Crackle Glaze” which is a crazing technique used in ceramics to create a decorative crackling effect on the surface of a piece.
Glaze cracking of porcelain is a natural phenomenon for the chinese ceramic crafts, is a unique processing technology. The technique relies on the fact that heating and cooling of the clay body of the ceramic causes it to expand while the pieces glazing does not. This expansion causes the glaze to crack and produce “crackle patterns” along the surface. To achieve this surface the pieces were fired to 1300° centigrade in a reducing atmosphere in a gas kiln.
These bamboo shaped jar was specially made to give the appearance of the glaze cracks down the inside. The top and part of the lid are left unglazed to show you the original character of the clay and how it is transformed into porcelain. The master hand paints brown spots outside of the jar to copy the bamboo rust spot.
