What Is It?

The Moscow Mule is a mug, and a drink. Made with vodka, ginger beer and lime juice, garnished with a slice or wedge of lime, the Moscow Mule is named for the primary ingredient: vodka. It was born in California in 1941 and later became popular during the 1950’s vodka craze in the US, then went on to become a favorite among celebrities and Las Vegas clubs in the following decade. At the time of its creation the Moscow Mule was served in a custom copper mug, which became a core part of the drink’s ingredients.

Since that time the mug and the drink have become synonymous. The Moscow Mule is a little slice of history, and even has its own Wikipedia page.

Why Copper?

Not just for the looks. Copper is, of course, a distinctive metal and goes great with most any kitchen or bar decor. But there was a bit of science behind the decision to use copper when the Moscow Mule was created. As it turns out copper helps facilitate the ionization of acids commonly found in citrus fruits, which enhances flavor and zing. Copper also maintains the cool temperature of the drink better than other materials.
