The Story of Rooibos

It was the local people who first discovered that the fine, needle-like leaves of the wild Aspalathus Linearis plant made a tasty, aromatic tea. Found nowhere else in the world but the northern Cederberg region in the Western Cape, Rooibos became a staple of health and culture for the aboriginal peoples of South Africa.

The Story of Honeybush

The only place in the world where Honeybush grows is the winter rainfall region of South Africa. Cultivated along the Langkloof Valley and the East coast regions of the Western Cape, it is traditionally grown & harvested by hand by the descendants of the Khoi-San people, adhering to stringent organic production rules.

Unfortunately, as Rooibos & Honeybush became popular with the white settlers in South Africa during the 1800’s, the native farmers were pushed off their lands and endured over a century of oppression. These teas became cultivated on vast plantations and exported throughout the world. Still today over 98% of all Rooibos is plantation-grown. Fair Trade certification ensures that the local people are treated fairly and reap the benefits of not only their hard work but their heritage. Health Benefits

Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine free, low in tannins & high in anti-oxidants, including a very rare anti-oxidant called nothofagin, and is the only known natural source of aspalathin. Honeybush is said to calm the nervous system, boost the immune system and is rich in iron and calcium. Used traditionally to teat coughs due to its content of pinitol, which is also known to lower blood sugar levels.
